Memorial Day. For some people, Memorial Day weekend signals the beginning of summer. The weather is warmer, the days are longer. The pool and the ocean are beckoning. The lazy days of summer are just around the corner.
For those of us who have served in the Military, or who have lost friends and perhaps loved ones to a war, or to the after effects of fighting in a war, it’s also a time of reflection.
Memorial Day is officially observed on the last Monday of each May. It became and official day of observance after the Civil War, but it did not become a federal holiday until 1971. Traditionally its a three day weekend, and it is a time for families and friends to gather. Some of those gatherings will begin with a visit to a cemetery, where those of us who are remembering and honoring lost loved ones, will plant flags or lay wreaths on their graves.
No matter how you choose to celebrate the long weekend this year, we, at Central Communications, wish you and your loved ones a Happy and Healthy Holiday weekend. And we offer up a special prayer that all of our men and women in the service, and their families will be kept out of harm’s way.
