It’s that time of year. That time of year when we were children and it meant that school would be out soon. The days are longer, the nights shorter and the weather is warmer. There are barbecues, trips to the beach and pool parties for some. For my family, it always meant that summer was here.
It’s also a time for remembrance. At the end of the Civil War, these last days of May were declared an Official Holiday, and it was not yet called Memorial Day. It was instead known as Decoration Day. The US Memorial Day site states: “It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.”
Memorial Day weekend. A time to remember, to honor our veterans and to celebrate the beginning of summer. All of us here at Central Communications Riverside and Henderson, wish you and yours a Happy Memorial Day weekend.
